Small Animal Behavior

  1. Q. My small pet is jumpy. How can I relax him more?
    A. Many small pets are nervous, as they are prey animals and become timid in new situations. Follow these tips to make your small pet less nervous:
      • Be Quiet: Putting your small pet in a quiet room and talking to him in a low voice will calm him down
      • Don't Grab: Try to pick up your small pet slowly and let him sniff your hand
      • Give your pet space: Give your pet some hiding time to help him feel safe enough to venture out later.
  2. Q. Can I potty train my small pet?
    A. Sometimes hamsters, rabbits and guinea pigs can be trained to use a litter box. Usually, rabbits can be trained the most easily to use a litter box. Use patience and consistency when teaching your pet to use a box and fill it with safe, absorbent litter such as a paper or wood fiber litter.
  3. Q. Why do my reptile pets fight?
    A. Male reptiles will fight for dominance, territory or breeding rights, and must be separated from other males. Other reptiles are solitary animals who are not accustomed to living with others.
  4. Q. How can I stop my lizard from biting?
    A. Usually, lizards bite when they feel threatened or are in danger. It is extremely difficult to train lizards and other reptiles not to bite.
